(2005.11.30) VaultletSuite v1.5.1 is released

This is a maintenance release, which focuses primarily on bug fixes and interface polish. Worthy of note are the following 3 improvements: 1) the account creation wizard now (correctly) allows for full internationalization of the account holder's first and last name, 2) the VaultletSuite Manager now can run in micro mode (saving considerable desktop space), and 3) startup times and progress feedback for VaultletMail power users has been improved. Enjoy!

(2005.10.19) VaultletSoft announces international crypto export strategy

After much gnashing of teeth and furious head scratching while reviewing the U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security's (BIS) somewhat convoluted crypto export regulations, we've decided upon an international crypto export strategy that makes the VaultletSuite available for use by virtually everybody worldwide.* With the upcoming release of version 1.5.0 in November 2005, we're going to make the source code used to build the VaultletSuite client available for peer review.

Doing so not only allows us to serve a significantly larger group of people in need of privacy protection, but it also makes it easier for cryptographers and security analysts to get a look at what we're doing here at VaultletSoft. When you consider that we're going to make our client source code available for peer review along with our use of Open Source cryptography APIs (Bouncycastle and Moonbounce), we hope that you get a pretty strong sense that our comments about the importance of transparency are much more than just idle marketing speak and hand waving.

*As long as you're not a citizen, resident or currently residing in an "E:1" country as defined by the US BIS (Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Libya, Sudan, Syria), you should be eligible to use the VaultletSuite.

(2005.10.10) VaultletSoft announces subscription bonus program

Now that the latest version of the VaultletSuite is in production, we've decided to give our users further incentive to ask for help, request enhancements, or report bugs: every reproduceable bug, published question, or request for enhancement that we implement will be rewarded with an additional free one year subscription to the VaultletSuite.

By coupling this program with the new ultra simple 'Contact Us' feature we've just added to version 1.4.0, we expect the the already simple and secure VaultletSuite to evolve even more quickly.

Note: we're happy to report that these rewards are retroactive too, so don't forget to take a look at your subscription information from time to see the years piling up.

As we've said more than a number of times in the new online documentation: it pays to let us know what you think! How often can you say that about this modern life?

(2005.08.16) VaultletSuite v1.4.0 in development

We're hard at work building what's going to be our first public release of the VaultletSuite. After months of pilot testing and listening to our intrepid early adopters' feedback, we think we've put something together that makes using industrial strength cryptography extremely simple (without sacrificing security in the process). We expect to make this next release available for public consumption towards the end of September 2005.

(2005.04.16) VaultletSuite hits v1.1.0

We've just updated the VaultletSuite to version 1.1.0, which contains enhancements to make our software even more secure and performant. VaultletMail users now have their privacy protected by automatic and transparent encryption when plain text email messages are imported into our system from the outside world. From this day forward, all email that sits on our servers will be encrypted to our users' public key, protecting them from prying eyes, whether they're bored script kiddies or overreaching government agencies.

Dial up users rejoice: also worthy of note are the tremendous improvements in terms of bandwidth consumption, download times and overall performance: everything's faster, from downloading new versions of the VaultletSuite (on Linux and Windows) to saving PasswordValet files, starting programs, along with sending and checking for new mail. In an average session, the VaultletSuite is a wee bit over 500% more efficient in its use of bandwidth than version 1.0.0!

What these performance enhancements mean to you is that now, for every subscription account that we host on our server, we can now host an additional 5 or 6 free demo accounts at no extra cost to us. Since the adoption of secure communication technology is largely a sociological phenomenon (which needs to be as free and friction-free as possible), this means that when we hit version 1.2.0, you can begin inviting your friends, family and colleagues to enjoy free demo accounts which provide the ultimate in private, secure, spam-free email at no cost to them, you or us!

(2005.04.08-09) R. P. Ruiz and the VaultletSuite featured in Cox Broadcasting segment on security, privacy, and USB drives

After representing EPIC in an interview on security and privacy issues with Brigette Langmade at Cox Broadcasting's Washington Bureau, talk turned to the half gigabyte USB flash drive I was carrying on my keychain and how I keep a freshly encrypted backup copy of the latest source code and build of the VaultletSuite on it. One interesting question led to another, and soon I was invited back to discuss how the VaultletSuite addresses a number of security and privacy issues that are of particular importance to people who shuttle from home to work and back again with all their personal and business data stored (and at risk) on USB flash drives.

The segment aired Friday and Saturday April 8th and 9th on their national affiliates, 10 stations in all, and did a nice job of describing what some of the risks are, and what the VaultletSuite does to protect their carrier's privacy and security.

It was a great opportunity to for me step out of my habitual roles of code slinger, security geek, and privacy advocate and back into my old teaching habits, something I haven't done much of lately as I've been doing quite a bit of lone-wolf coding on the VaultletSuite in the last year. Special thanks to EPIC and Cox Broadcasting for giving me an excuse to get out of the cloisters for a bit.

(2005.03.31) Testing of VaultletSuite v1.1.0 begins

We've begun testing three major enhancements to the VaultletSuite which make our software even more secure and performant:

VaultletMail: All email generated from outside the VaultletMail system is now encrypted when it enters our system. Even though this is a computationally expensive operation, we decided to do the right thing by prioritizing protecting our subscription customer's privacy over being more operationally efficient.

VaultletSuite: Downloads of the coming new version (v1.1) are now approximately 1/3 the size of v1.0, and all communications between the VaultletSuite client on your desktop and our servers is now being compressed before they're encrypted (note: client server communication has always encrypted using SSL). The end result is that users on all platforms (Windows, Linux and Mac OS X) can now effectively use the upcoming 1.1 version with low-bandwidth internet connectivity.

VaultletMail: We've made our network communication strategy more efficient. As a result of combining this with compressing all client-server communications, we can host 5 times as many accounts than we could with the 1.0.0 version, while consuming the same amount of bandwidth.

(2005.01.13) ISO: VaultletSoft seeks nurturing Mac OSX testers update

We just purchased (ordered, I should say) on of these. That doesn't mean that you're off the hook, we still need people who didn't write the software to test it. Besides, they're not going to be shipping for a while.

(2005.01.08) ISO: VaultletSoft seeks nurturing Mac OSX testers...

We build the VaultletSuite exclusively on Linux, and even have a couple of Windows (2000 & XP) computers lying around for testing; what we don't have is any OSX boxes to test it on. If you have OSX version 10.3.6, the latest Java runtime, in addition to 512mg of RAM and you want to help out, ...drop us a line!

(2005.01.06) Happy new calendar to you too: VaultletSuite v1.0.0 alpha 1 hits the streets

It's official: the VaultletSuite has met minimalist functionality requirements, and as such is ready to be seen by more people. We plan on posting possibly one more alpha build, and at least 2 more beta builds before version 1.0 is considered fit for production work.

Stay tuned for invitations to test drive, use, and abuse the VaultletSuite as you see fit.
