(2006.12.01) VaultletSuite v2.0 even helps you create good karma?
To accompany the release of the VaultletSuite v2.0, VaultletSoft has created a marketing strategy that makes it possible for both VaultletSoft and non-profits alike to prosper and provide mutually supportive environments.
"Call it an odd convergence, but the desire to do good, promote a fledgling business and avoid throwing money out the window on dubious online advertising practices led VaultletSoft to abandon traditional advertising approaches" says VaultletSoft Inc. founder R. P. Ruiz.
"VaultletSoft no longer uses the standard 'pay per click' advertising schemes promoted by search engine giants like Google and Yahoo. Instead, VaultletSoft will make donations to non-profits whose philosophies and missions complement VaultletSoft's by paying supporters of these non-profits for referrals that lead their friends and colleagues to the VaultletSoft website".
How does VaultletSoft plan to attract people to its website without paying for a search engine's clicks? Instead of placing an ad with Google, VaultletSoft's employees, customers, and supporters will contact people within their own social networks using their secure VaultletMail accounts. Each message sent will describe what the company is doing, their reasons for doing it, and gives each recipient a choice as to where VaultletSoft's $1 contribution per message will go when its recipient follows the URL enclosed in the message.
Not only will VaultletSoft pay for all messages that their recipients respond to, but each new account created as a result of this process will generate additional donations: for each new free VaultletSuite account created, VaultletSoft will donate $2; for each two year VaultletSuite subscription purchased, VaultletSoft will contribute 50% of the proceeds to the chosen non-profit.

(2006.12.13) VaultletSoft founder, R. P. Ruiz interviewed on WPFW
R. P. (Rick) Ruiz recently appeared on WPFW's Latino Media Collective's show on voter disenfranchisement,
e-voting and insecure email systems.
In discussing the upcoming launch of the VaultletSuite 2.0, Ruiz explained the utter lack of security in email systems as most people know them, and how VaultletMail makes it easy for individuals to protect their privacy and control where their emails end up.
In the lively segment on voter disenfranchisement, Ruiz and the author of Stealing Democracy, Spencer Overton, discussed how a combination of politics, gerrymandering, bureaucratic processes and unethical corporate software development processes (think Diebold) have created a highly suspect and tamperable e-voting system.
In order to restore confidence in the current state of affairs, governments, both local and national, would do well to consider adopting an Open Source ethos such as the one described here.
We've encoded the interview, complete with diverse(!) musical interludes in MP3 and Ogg Vorbis formats for you. Stay tuned for the interview to be offered as individual segments.

We at VaultletSoft would like to celebrate a significant accomplishment with you: we've recently released version 2.0 of the VaultletSuite.
Not only does this version of the VaultletSuite contain numerous ease of use and security enhancements that our faithful early adopters requested, but it's also now a first class citizen on OS X and is a sight to behold on any platform.
Even though that's not all the news that fits, we're going to hold off on telling you everything until we see you at our 2.0 launch party on Saturday, December 16th at 4:00pm.
See you on the 16th!

(2006.11.22) Coming soon: VaultletSuite 2.0
Our biggest update to the VaultletSuite arrives Sunday, November 26th.
We'll be upgrading our systems from 10:00am EST until noon EST. While it's likely that our servers will
be upgraded and back online in less than half an hour, upgrades always
have an element of surprise to them, so we prefer to be conservative
in our estimates of the time involved.
While we regret the interruption
of service, we look forward to providing you with enhanced VaultletSuite
features, performance, and even more of the spam-be-gone and byte protecting
goodness(tm) that you know and love.

(2006.11.01) The results of our inclusive approach to technology and language
We just finished analyzing October's website access logs and found that our website visitors users are now 5 times more likely than average computer users to use operating systems other than Windows, and are more than 4 times as likely than the average website visitor to use a non-Internet Explorer browser.
25% of the visitors to our website used OS X, Linux, and other Unix variants, while 66% of our visitors and users used Firefox, Safari, and Mozilla, among many other assorted IE alternatives. IE's browser share was only 34%.
When you compare these figures with the estimated world market share for Windows
(~95%) and Internet Explorer variations (~85%), this is amazing.
Even more interesting is the percentage of downloads of the VaultletSuite launchers, in which 39% of the downloads were for OSX, Linux and Unix. Only 61% of the downloads were for the Windows platform.
But wait, there's more! Since we introduced our first multilingual version of the VaultletSuite (English and Spanish) at the beginning of the year, the percentage of people who use the Spanish version has risen to 42% of all users.
Clearly, our cross platform and multilingual approach is working out well; both our customers and VaultletSoft benefit from our having made the extra effort to be inclusive both technologically and linguistically.
In a sense, we have built it, and you have come. Thanks! ¡Mil gracias a todos!

(2006.09.05) VaultletSuite users are big on "alternative" Operating Systems and browsers
We analyzed August's website access logs and found that our visitors and VaultletSuite users were 3 times more likely to use a
non-Microsoft operating system, and were 4 times as likely than the "average" website visitor to use a non-Internet Explorer browser.
Fully 16% of all visitors used OS X, Linux, and other Unix
variants, while 66% of all visitors and users used Firefox, Safari, and Mozilla, among many other assorted IE alternatives.
IE's browser share was only 34%.
When you compare these figures with the estimated world market share for Windows
(~95%) and Internet Explorer variations (~85%), this is amazing.
How do we explain this? You, our visitor and/or VaultletSuite user, are not only tech savvy, you're proactive. While most
people just take whatever comes shoveled onto their hard drive when they buy their computer, you actually take the time to find and obtain safer, more
secure alternatives to protect you and your bytes.
Good for you!

(2006.08.18) VaultletSoft Founder, R. P. Ruiz, interviewed on Telemundo and Univisión
R. P. (Rick) Ruiz was recently interviewed by both Univisión and Telemundo, who asked him to analyze and explain recent developments in the area of airport security and the upcoming U.S. Government's "E-Passport".
In the segment concerning liquid bomb detection, Rick explained that while it may be technically possible to detect liquid explosives using detectors such as these, it's not the best investment of taxpayers' money: it would be far more productive to pay for and train additional security personnel than to buy and blindly believe in expensive technology's capacity to protect us.
Properly trained humans can adapt to changing security threats and improvise on the fly; this is something that rigidly designed technology cannot do. What's the end result, after spending hundreds of millions of dollars to install liquid bomb detectors, if terrorists smuggle gas based bombs on board?
In fact, it would be far more prudent to foil plots to smuggle bombs on board before they get to the airport. In fact, the lesson that should have been learned in preventing the London liquid bomb plot was that old-fashioned police and security work still has significant value.
In the segment on the new RFID passports, Rick described the history of the E-Passport's Rube Goldberg-esque design decisions, and the possibilities for exploiting those decisions.

(2006.08.17) VaultletSuite tutorial
to be presented at 2006 Know How Conference in Mexico
A tutorial on getting started with the VaultletSuite
will be presented by Privaterra
in a workshop aimed at NGOs and activists working on sensitive
issues and/or repressive circumstances.
Privaterra, whose mission is to provide technological
education and support for civil society organizations (Human Rights
NGOs), chose to provide the introductory tutorial for the VaultletSuite
over Hushmail because of the VaultletSuite's multilingual support.
In addition to providing secure spam-free email
along with secure password and file management, the VaultletSuite
also provides support for left to right languages and presents
its interface in Spanish and English.
VaultletSoft's President, R. P. Ruiz, is "pleased to see the VaultletSuite used
by people who need it" and "looks forward to further
collaboration between VaultletSoft, Privaterra and other civil
society organizations who would benefit from the easy-to-use industrial
strength cryptographic protection that the VaultletSuite brings
to its users."

(2006.01.24) An open letter to the
Bouncy Castle crypto developers from VaultletSoft
We at VaultletSoft are pleased to recognize
the sterling work performed by the developers and community surrounding
the Open Source Bouncy Castle
crypto APIs. VaultletSoft employs the Bouncy Castle crypto APIs
in the VaultletSuite to help you protect your electronic privacy.
Today we told them so on their crypto developer's listserve:
Greetings all!
I have an announcement below that I think that many of you will
find interesting. First and foremost though, I'd like to thank
the BC developers and community for having created the BC Crypto
APIs. Without the fruits of their fine work that we've built upon,
we would never have been able to make the following announcement:
My company, VaultletSoft, is pleased to use select pieces of the
BC lightweight crypto API in our recently released VaultletSuite
software. The VaultletSuite is a collection of applications that
help you and others to protect their privacy from just about anywhere,
on just about any platform.
We offer simple, industrial strength (2048 bit RSA and 256 AES)
file encryption, password management and secure, spam-free email
for free for personal, non-profit and non-governmental use. What's
more, it's based entirely upon an Open Source stack: Linux, Apache,
MySQL, JBoss, Tomcat, Axis, Struts, Ant, and of course, Bouncy
Castle.
Since we firmly believe that there's no hope for credibility without
transparency, we publish our wrapper objects as open source on
sourceforge, and
have developed a source code for
peer review license for the VaultletSuite client that we're
currently exporting worldwide.
We've also created a nifty Flash teaser
page that acknowledges our debt to the BC developers and community.
So by all means, sign up for a free account. Use it, even abuse
it if you like, but don't forget: let us know what you think!
Thanks for you hard work, time and interest,
Rick Ruiz, President
VaultletSoft Inc.
